Exercise On My Body, Soul, And Mind - 1460 Words

When I was little, I felt like I was always active. I was always out with my friends, playing, running around, and having fun. However, after starting school, I had less time to be active. I played during PE and recess, but when I came home, some of my time was taken over because of school work. This pattern continued, and my time for individual exercise only decreased as I got into high school. I was able to stay relatively fit by doing sports during school, and so I did not take as much time to exercise on my own outside of extracurricular activities. Exercise not only helps people improve their physical condition, but it also improves aspects regarding the soul and the mind. Even without any outside evidence, through past personal experience, I can say that exercise has an impact on my body, soul, and mind. The impact of consistent exercise on the body is apparent. If I start lifting a ten-pound weight, I will engage muscles required to lift the object and over time, I will be abl e to lift a twenty-pound object. If I run a mile everyday, my endurance will improve and soon I will be able to run two miles. By exercising consistently, the physical body is changed. For instance, the weight of a person may increase or decrease based off the person’s diet and exercise. In addition, the size of the muscles in the arms can be increased by doing specific exercises that will train the muscles in the arm (like the biceps, triceps, and deltoids). However, defining hate as the basis for a crime is not as easy without possibly jeopardizing constitutional rights in the process. Hate crime laws generally add enhanced punishments to existing statues. A hate crime law seeks to treat a crime, if it can be demonstrated that the offense was a hate crime differently from the way it would be treated under ordinary criminal law. The following three areas are concerns about hate crimes legislation: 1) protecting the individuals rights of association and speech; 2) determining the boundaries of the law that will reach and change peoples hearts and minds; and 3) defining people as member of categories or discrete units that are the target of intentional discrimination. Hate Crimes are becoming more and more common in the United States. In a report released February 13, 2001, the FBI said 7,876 hate crimes were reported in the United State in 1999. The latest figures represent an increase over the 7,755 hate crimes reported in 1998, but the difference may not be significant because more agencies were reporting such crimes to the FBI in 1999. The figures are in the FBI’s Hate Crime Statistics, an annual publication. Seventeen people were murdered in incidents classified as hate crimes, compared to 13 in 1998. Of the total the 7,876 incidents, racial bias was associated with 54.5 percent of the cases, followed by religious bias at 17.9 percent, sexual bias at 16.7, percent ethnic bias at 10.5 percent and bias against the disabled at .24 percent. In the novel, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, the true bond of friends is shown through the relationship between the two main protagonists, Lily and Snow Flower. As they grew older and got married, they experienced many difficulties trying to meet each other but still overcame them by writing to each other constantly. Through their everlasting devotion to each other, these two girls formed a relationship that stayed true and loyal for their entire lives. In nineteenth-century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, the women in one remote Hunan County developed their own secret code for communication called nu shu or â€Å"women’s writing†. While Lily is of average social class and wealth, Snow Flower is from an esteemed family whose grandfather was an imperial scholar for the Emperor. Even with their social class differences, Lily and Snow Flower are not disturbed by it, marking a true loyalty to each other. When Lily and Snow Flower both got married, they found obstructions that hindered them from meeting one another. Since Lily married into the most respected family in a nearby village near her own natal home due to her perfect â€Å"lily feet†, and Snow Flower married into a distant village further away, arranging a rendezvous was hard especially since they had more important purposes to take care of when getting married. One was to obey their mother-in-law and husband and give birth to many sons. Because Lily’s mother-in-law was very traditional and kept to all of the women’s rules, she was extremely strict when it came to Lily meeting Snow Flower. Even with all these hindrances, Lily and Snow Flower found ways to communicate with one another. They used â€Å"nu shu† and the paper fan that was first used when they met before becoming laotongs. By communicating this way, they expressed their inner most feelings on marriage and matters that seemed so trivial to them. The fan is a symbol of their unwavering sign of true friendship for it showed everything that happened between the two girls from childhood to death. Throughout all the sufferings and joyous moments they had together, Lily and Snow Flower kept true to each other, telling each other everything they knew. But one problem arose when Lily discovered the true secret of Snow Flower’s once respected family. Snow Flower’s family which was very well revered by all those in the village suffered a staggering blow to the family’s honor when her father took to the â€Å"pipe†, meaning opium. Slowly, the family name was destroyed due to the weakness of the father and they became in debt and were left with only their once prosperous house with no furniture. Gradually, all the people in her family left, leaving behind only her drug addicted father and helpless mother. Lily had no idea that Snow Flower was living in such state until the day arrived when Lily finally went to her house to help prepare Snow Flower for her wedding. Even when Snow Flower did not tell Lily the most important aspects of her life, Lily still accepted Snow Flower and even tried to understand her distress even more. If loyalty marks true friendship, then what Lily and Snow Flower had between them was the mark of forgiving and understanding faithfulness that extended a lifetime. The novelist, Lisa See displays a relationship that was carried on throughout two girls’ footbinding days to as far as their marriage days. Through the blissful and cheerful times to their misery and pain, Lily and Snow Flower remained close as ever, exhibiting their mark of true friendship.
